    What makes a good neighbor?

Good neighbors are subjective for everyone as it mainly stems on what people look for in individuals whether they are chattier or whether they are more withdrawn. It varies on a spectrum, and everyone has a higher or lower tolerance for it. For example, let’s say it’s a more withdrawn or peaceful person. To them a good neighbor is someone who waves when eyes lock, maybe occasionally helps them with a task every now and then. But keeps their distance and space and contributes to a quiet atmosphere. Now imagine a chattier and more extroverted neighbor moves into the neighborhood. The withdrawn person will probably at first watch the chattier neighbor and already be irritated with them in passive aggression. The chattier neighbor is just innocently doing more outside activities than the others, their morning walk, casually chatting with other neighbors, and tending to their pets. The withdrawn neighbor will think the chattier extroverted neighbor is too loud and inconsiderate, disliking their presence. While the chattier neighbor will see the withdrawn neighbor as unfriendly and maybe even silently judgmental and dislike them as well. So, what is good to one as a neighbor can be seen as bad to another, so ultimately, it’s preference to what makes a good neighbor, because we are all different at the end of the day.

  • The halls burst with beautiful signs of life as kids talk and move in unison,
as if they are creating a harmonious serenade.
Among them, an outcast hides in the shadow
unkempt, unclean, and dust trembling at their feet.

    Kids laugh and stay clear,
as if the outcast carries a disease.
The outcast sighs as they tread to class,
eyes lifeless, too tired to care.
Their hoodie provides the only form of solace,
    tucked comfortably over their head.

Their rugged backpack hits the floor with a dull bam
They take out a book as the desk eats a nasty slam.
The ripple transcends, and heads turn on command.
As the outcast looks up, they are met with disapproving glares
each one like the gaze of a snake.

The outcast feels like a mouse beneath them
    and quickly loses their gaze.
They remain a ghost among the mass of kids.
    Isolation has become comforting
the premise of someone on the brink of being too far gone.

The day passes like smoke in a mirror,
a cycle of lost hope and silent turmoil.
The heart gasps for any signs of faith,
as cracks start to trace the edges.
Until one day, it shatters like glass.

    That is it.
In the outcast’s mind, it’s already the end.

The night will be their last waltz.
They write a letter from the open safe of their broken heart.
They will not concede anymore with their past,
as they sneak out during the night.

What must be done, must simply be done.
Their eyes narrow on a knife like prey.
    It screams reprieve
as a smile treads the outcast’s face
a forlorn expression that feels like years
    since it’s seen the day.

The knife touches the skin with desire
    as blood seeps into view.
    Painful, yet extremely satisfying.

    The outcast closes their eyes,
    whispering their last wish,
    ready to trace the heavens.

    But then, their phone rings.

    It slices through the silence.
    They lose total focus.
Fueled by anger, they answer with a scathing remark
only to be met with a response that
    freezes them in time.

    Disbelief.

    The knife,
once like a partner in crime,
    falls from their hand.
    It hits the cold tile
    lost and forgotten.

Tears slide down the outcast’s face as they sob.
Not due to sorrow or sadness,
    but because they know

    This is not their end.
    It’s simply the beginning.

  • Early childhood stains across the mirrors. As old, tired eyes glance through the sorrowful timeline. Each event is a crack representing shameful regret. As there is no going back. They thought they had time.

The sight of kids tramping through the mellow fields while living joyous pleasures. As warmth is brought to many hearts. Parents behold the sight, pleased and feeling fulfilled to the brim, The old, tired eyes watch themselves hiding out behind a tree, detached from the moment as if in a different reality. They thought they had time.

Club and Volunteering events come into play. As kids immersed in them and made heartfelt friends and connections. Social skills blossomed and identities were born, amass many. The old, tired eyes watched as they gave everything the cold shoulder. Uninterested and indifferent, they thought they had time.

Parties became pivotal as kids brought early significant others and exchanged invitations. Through trends and giggles, stages and music were the foreseen future. As kids held the letters dear to their hearts in excitement. The old, tired eyes watched themselves throw theirs in a trashcan. To them, the realm of books and video games was more enticing. They thought they had time.

As internships and opportunities swarmed the college schools, people took advantage with more connections and knowledge to show for it. The old, tired eyes watched themselves reject them, thinking they were all distractions. As a result, all things such as field trips faded, but alas, they continued on. They thought they had time.

As the old, tired eyes watched themself apply to a new beginning with their certified paper. They faced rejection as a near blank resume screamed unworthy. Borderline near the form of a silent judge. Nothing but a shrug as they apply to a full-time job. The old, tired eyes is beyond ashamed. They thought they had time.

As the days go by, like fading wind. The old, tired eyes watch themself slave away, bound and tied to meaningless work life chains, Reprieve was only fulfilled through the comforting acts of solace. Given through useless internet usage and brainless games. Not only was the body rotting away, but the brain was also destined to suffer the same mutualistic fate. They thought they had time.

The old, tired eyes watched in silence as they witness the day where they collapse on the job, battered and bruised. The toll of carrying heavy masses has finally reach the grand inevitable finale. The blazing sirens scream through the air, as the bed becomes their new mainstay. The x-ray is the grim reaper as they spell the bad news. The old, tired eyes watch as they are forced to relinquish their job. Their expression on the face says it all as it transcended the depths of shock. They thought they had time.

As the old, tired eyes watch themself recover and eventually leave the hospital. They realize they are lost in the fog. All options for them are nearly too late, and the energy for these things is now long gone with age and no longer good health. They watch themselves trek back to their apartment. Accepting as they boot their systems and put everything back in the rearview mirror. They still thought they had time.

Eventually, the purchase of canes and stair lifters are now in the picture. As the old, tired eyes watch themselves slowly move through the apartment. Unsatisfied, unfulfilled, bitter, resentful, miserable, all moods of bad fortunes. They look out their window, gazing at the outside life that seems so foreign to them. They slowly walk outside, just grasping and taking in the grass, the trees, the natural elements for what it is and appreciating the scent and the peace it brings. Their eyes grow watery as they grow sadly reminiscent. They thought they had time.

The old, tired eyes finally finish scouring their timeline as they reach the end. Back to their current reality, completely bedridden and near the end of their existence.  They sigh now, not because they thought they had time. But because time truly had them.

What’s something you would attempt if you were guaranteed not to fail.

I would definitely like to attempt high thrill activities. Such as skydiving, deep scuba diving, and bungee jumping, another thing I would definitely do is eat pufferfish, assuming the chefs would cook it correctly, as the chances of eating a toxin and facing death is always in the back view mirror. Considering how much of a scaredy cat and pessimist I tend to be at times. All of this is a dream, as I don’t trust for one bit any of this will not take a turn for the worse. But if failure was subdued for just one day for all. I would definitely attempt to do one of these things, as I do love a high thrill every now and then.

What could you do more of?

As someone who tends to be a massive homebody. I would say definitely interacting more with the outside world. Most of my pursuits or activities are mostly internal. Or should I say, mentally stimulating. Whenever I go out or out of the house, it’s usually because I have somewhere to be or somewhere to go. So, it’s a rare occurrence for me to be out just for the sake of it and living life. For example, a festival is where people usually go to immerse themselves in the joy of eating food or listening to music, and such, depending on what type of festival it is. People will go and just walk around, see what the festival has to offer, and enjoy the moment and experiences that it brings. I tend to go to things like these just to experience the main point of the festival and then leave. So, taking a food festival for an even more detailed example, people would get food and walk around, and enjoy the atmosphere and moment. I would get a takeout order and then leave the event asap. And this causes me to miss the moment of just experiencing things. It just seems very unnatural for me, and almost sort of a waste of time when it’s not true at all. Same way how I turned down to experience of seeing WWE in person in the crowd. My reasoning was that I would rather watch it on TV from my house to avoid the noisy crowd and atmosphere. Not realizing it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I have tendencies to do things like this, and it worries me the more I think about it, that I will be a boring person, future-wise, to be around. Cause I would rather be at home playing video games, or reading or writing, and not experiencing things from the outside world. Of course, not everyone is like that, but I tend to have extreme tendencies of this to the point where I think it’s becoming unhealthy. I’m not averse to new experiences, but it’s just mentally draining for me to put in the effort to experience them, so I tend not to bother. But it would do me well to experience something new externally every now and then. Not to stay in the realm of constant mental endeavors.

Share a lesson you wish you had learned earlier in life.

As a college student who recently graduated from high school. I wish I had understood the importance and value of college before going into it blindly to graduate as soon as possible. To get this out of the way, college definitely isn’t for everyone, especially since things like trades and the military exist. Although there are heavy drawbacks to each non-traditional point. Most kids, including me, go into college thinking to take some classes, get a degree in a high-paying field or whatever, and then get a job that pays well. A normal, smooth yet simple path, but in reality, most of the time it leads to being unable to find employment and not being able to get a job. Then they end up working a lower job completely unrelated to their field of study, and that’s pretty much the most common cycle, leaving people frustrated and thinking they have wasted their time. The biggest mistake, though, is not building a resume during one’s time in college. Trying to make connections, network, study the market, and do internships. All of this stuff makes a bigger difference than one thinks and can lead to opportunities that those who passed them wouldn’t have otherwise. College is essentially an investment and a sacrifice. Not only is one spending money to receive education, but they are also essentially sacrificing on average four years of full-time job income in hopes of getting a better job down the line that provides better income. Just going through college to get a degree with nothing else will only take one so far. If they are betting and relying on luck or just easy circumstances to get a job after graduating, it will most likely not end up in their favor, and again, to unemployment or a job that has no relevance to what they studied. Not to mention, college tends to lack practical application as it provides tons of theoretical application. Therefore, it’s up to the person to get that practical experience elsewhere before applying for jobs. College is definitely not a scam in a sense, as long as jobs exist, it will maintain its relevance, but nowadays it’s a lot harder to get tons of value out of college just by floating and going through it to graduate. Not impossible, but not ideal anymore either. Knowing this, I still have time to turn things around, but I just wish I had understood sooner that college is not just about studying and getting a job. It’s more so using all that it has to offer to build your resume, network to succeed, and create job opportunities.

Do you see yourself as a leader?

Leading is something that should be simple in theory, but in reality, it is a lot more than people bargain for. As a leader, one must be incredibly good at seeing the big picture and scope of things. This is simply because, as a leader, everything is one’s job and responsibility. People tend to have this skewed perception that being a leader means I can tell people what to do or I call all the shots. While this is true, it means that any obstacle or fallback ultimately falls on the leader in the end. With great power comes great responsibility, and not everyone is cut out for such a role. As someone who tends to be passive and a little withdrawn at times, being a leader would equate to exponential effort. It would not be an ideal cup of tea, and that’s okay. Everyone excels and thrives at different things. Some people are natural-born leaders, and it’s just how it is. Upon that, while everyone can lead and micromanage, not everyone can do it effectively.

Are you holding a grudge? About?

Grudges are all-around a detriment. Not only do they eat one slowly from the inside, but it also causes a huge root of passive-aggressiveness. No matter the amount of silent hatred, it’ll hurt the person who holds it more than whatever is currently being resented. If anger must simmer, it should be a gradual phase, not a lifelong feeling to hold onto like a leech. Not to dismiss any past occurrences that may have caused the feeling of resentment. But it’s insanely unhealthy to let it dictate judgment and bitterness for the entirety of one’s lifetime. The simplest solution is to simply forgive but not forget. Therefore, one can move on, but their resentment doesn’t control them or make them potentially irate. We all hold grudges, but it’s how we heal from them that fully counts.

What’s your favorite time of day?

The favorite time of the day has to be the morning. In the morning, seeing the beautiful effervescent dawn and the birds chirp in a harmonious unison. Very soothing and pleasing to the ears, as it’s a great time for silent solace. The morning provides and treads with utmost silence. As the night signals the close of a chapter. The morning signals the start of a new beginning. Each morning erases past remnants and allows one to undo past mistakes or reflect. After all, they do not define us, and the morning allows us to start anew and simply be better.

What is a word you feel that too many people use?

Like is a very good example of an overused word. What is meant is not the word specifically, as in usage rather than how it is used. People nowadays use the word like to bridge gaps in knowledge to effectively express themselves. For example, if someone asks a person How are you feeling? A normal response would be I’m feeling good, maybe a little happy because of X or I’m feeling sad or even angry because of Y. But now in modern society, most average sentences hold the context as I feel like happy because, like I got a new job offer, or did you know like that a jaguar can crush a turtle shell. It’s used in context to the point where, in sentences, it is excessive usage that is not needed. But it’s a common habit amongst many. Not that like shouldn’t be used because it’s a common and very great word for comparisons. But it definitely has played a role in common everyday sentences and communication. Whether it’s for the better or for the worse.
